Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a registration fee?

Yes.  There is a minimal registration fee to help cover the cost of the event and to help ensure that the funds raised allow us to care for more animals.  The registration fees are:
$35  Adults  (18+)
$5 Youth (17 & Under)
(Early bird discounts are available, click here to register now!)

All walkers who register by April 27th will receive a Registered Walker Packet in the mail that includes their Bib Number, a Donation Envelope (for cash and checks that have been collected), a Limited Edition San Diego Humane Society Bracelet and a ticket to the Pancake Breakfast.  All walkers who register after April 27th can pick up their packets at San Diego Humane Society, located at 5500 Gaines Street in San Diego, on Friday May 5th until 7pm or on Saturday, May 5th at the Walk for Animals starting at 7am.

Online registration closes at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2012
Day-of event registration will begin at 7 a.m.

Is my Walk for Animals registration fee tax deductible?

Unfortunately, no. The Internal Revenue Service considers entry fees for charitable races and walks to be similar to tickets to sports games, gala events or theater performances—it is the price paid for attending and participating. Since it is considered an entertainment fee, it is not tax deductible. However, although the registration fee is not tax deductible, anything donated above and beyond that fee is. Also, any donation made to support a Walk for Animals participant is tax deductible.

Can I bring my pets?

Friendly, on-leash dogs are welcome. Please keep in mind that approximately 1,000 dogs will be in attendance, so we do not recommend bringing other types of pets.

Can I bring my children and can they participate?

The Walk is a family-friendly event and children are welcome in all areas. All participants must register online or by printed form.  Youth participants are also welcome to fundraise. The top three youth participants will each be awarded a special prize.

What if I cannot attend the Walk but I want to raise funds for the animals?

Attendance on the day of the Walk is not required. If you cannot attend, you may still register online and use the website tools to raise funds, or use a printed pledge form to raise money. Send cash, checks and forms to: J. Spector at SDHS, 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego, CA 92110.

What do I do with the cash and checks that I collect?

We will mail a Registered Walker Packet to each walker who is registered online or has sent in a pledge form by April 27th.  All walkers who register after April 27th can pick up their packets at the San Diego Humane Society, located at 5500 Gaines Street in San Diego, on Friday May 5th until 7pm or on Saturday, May 5th at the Walk for Animals starting at 7am. Enclosed in the Registration Packet, among other items, will be a Donation Envelope.  Please bring the envelope with all cash and checks to the Walk. If you receive cash or checks after the walk, please drop off or mail the donations in a clearly marked envelope to: Jami Spector, SDHS, 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego, CA 92110.

How do I add cash and checks to my online total?

If you would like to include the cash or checks you receive to your donations total on your walk page, follow these instructions: Go to your “Participant Center” and click on the “Progress” tab at the top and then click on the link “Enter New Gifts,” on the right. The next page that comes up will allow you to enter check and cash gifts.

How are prizes awarded to team members?

Team members qualify for individual fundraising prizes (such as t-shirts) based on their individual fundraising. Team members are encouraged to register and raise money on their own. If a team raises money together by holding a team event (such as a bake sale), an SDHS Walk administer will divide the money equally amongst each of the team’s members. Please email walk@sdhumane.org with the team event fundraising information. The top three teams (to be determined after the walk by adding together each team’s members totals) will receive a special team prize.

How do I print out my gift history list?

In your Participant Center, Click on the “Progress” tab at the top. Scroll down and click on the "Download Personal Donation List" link and print. Bring this along with you to the Walk as proof of your online donations.

What do I do if I did not receive my Registered Walker Packet in the mail or I registered after April 27?

All walkers who register after April 27th can pick up their packets at the San Diego Humane Society, located at 5500 Gaines Street in San Diego, on Friday May 5th until 7pm or on Saturday, May 5th at the Walk for Animals starting at 7am. Enclosed in the Registration Packet, among other items, will be a Donation Envelope.  Please bring the envelope with all cash and checks to the Walk.

If you registered before April 27th and did not receive your packet in the mail by May 3rd please email us at walk@sdhumane.org or 619.243.3493
