Pet Store Animals Seized In Animal Cruelty Case Now Available For Adoption
San Diego Humane Society Holds Adoption Event for Animals Seized in Pet Store Investigation
SAN DIEGO — June 12, 2012
What: The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is holding a special adoption event on Saturday, July 14th as more than 60 animals will be available for adoption from the pet store raid in March, including dogs, puppies, birds and rabbits.
On March 27th, search warrants were served at three pet stores and one private residence, and the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA seized 117 animals following a lengthy investigation related to the health and safety of the animals. El Cajon resident, Johnson Le was arrested on June 19th. Working with the District Attorney’s Office, Le, and his Attorney, the animals were signed over to the care of the San Diego Humane Society on June 29th. Le’s trial is scheduled in August and he is being charged with four felony counts of 597 (b) P.C. animal abuse, 10 misdemeanor counts of 597 (b) P.C. animal abuse and more than a dozen violations of the California Health and Safety Code.
“Typically, animals that come from these types of conditions need a lot of supportive medical and behavioral care, which they have received from our very caring staff,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society. “More than 60 of the pet store animals are available for adoption at this time. The rest need a bit more care and will be available for adoption in the coming weeks. Many of the reptiles have been transferred to other organizations which specialize in finding homes for these animals.”
Throughout the adoption event, the San Diego Humane Society’s experienced adoption counselors will be on-hand to help prospective pet parents choose the best companion animal for their home.
Weitzman continues, “These animals have been in our care for nearly four months for the pending investigation, so the goal of this special adoption event is to get these animals into the loving homes they deserve.”
