The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA Celebrates Barktoberfest
Dog Fancy Magazine Names San Diego Most Dog-Friendly City for Second Time
The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA's dog adopt-a-thon, "Barktoberfest," returns to celebrate America's most dog-friendly city! The annual dog-focused adoption event aims to find homes for every wonderful dog and puppy in the San Diego Humane Society's care. To help alleviate the costs associated with bringing home a new dog, the first 25 attendees to adopt an adult dog will receive a complimentary special "starter kit" gift basket including food, toys, treats and a gift certificate for Muttique, the San Diego Humane Society's retail store.
In addition to finding new homes for canine companions, the event celebrates San Diego's recognition as America's most dog-friendly large city-San Diego has again been named "DogTown USA" by Dog Fancy magazine. Dog Fancy studied big cities and small towns across the U.S. searching for a city with the best natural resources, innovative dog-friendly activities, excellent veterinary care and exemplary shelter adoption rates. The award, which was also given to San Diego in 2007, is shared this year with mid-size city winner Huntington Beach and small town winner Carmel, CA. To recognize their role in helping make San Diego one of the country's most dog-friendly cities, Dog Fancy magazine will present a check for $2,000 to the San Diego Humane Society, and the Office of the Mayor will also be presenting a proclamation on behalf of Mayor Jerry Sanders honoring the organization at Barktoberfest. When: Saturday, October 10 Adoption hours: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dog Fancy check presentation and Mayoral Proclamation: 11 a.m. Canine Carnival: 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., featuring fun, informative dog focused booths, pet-friendly vendors, an "Ask a Trainer" booth, free snacks and refreshments, and more.
