June Volunteer of the Month
Congratulations to Dianne Lovell, the June 2010 Volunteer of the Month. She began volunteering with the San Diego Humane Society in July 2007, and has donated over 412 hours assisting with our Behavior and Training, Adoption Counselor Assistant, and ROP Internship programs.
Dianne’s Background:
Dianne has been married for many, many years, and has one beautiful daughter who will be married this summer. Dianne has several cats, a dog and two tortoises. She also has anywhere from one to many foster cats depending on the season. Dianne just started working for the San Diego Humane Society in the Human Resources Department. She enjoys how wonderful the volunteer program staff, the adoption staff, the animal care staff, the customer service staff, and (of course) the outstanding Behavior &Training staff are to be around. Now she is finding that other staff members who are more behind the scenes are just as dedicated and nice as everyone she has met in her volunteer role.
Dianne’s hobby is volunteering! Besides volunteering at SDHS, she also volunteers for Rescue House, Pug Rescue, California Wolf Center, and the Feral Cat Coalition. She fosters cats and dogs, traps feral cats, works with vets at the feral cat clinics, helps with husbandry and wolf captures and is also a cat adoption counselor!
Why did you decide to volunteer at the San Diego Humane Society?
“With all the fostering that I do, I decided that I should know more about the medical side and entered the ROP Vet Assistant program. An internship is required to complete the course. Since I was working full time, I needed a place that was open on the weekends. Luckily SDHS works with the ROP program and I began my internship. I was able to work in a variety of areas and when I helped in the B&T area, I found this was an area I was drawn to. After my internship was completed, I was hooked and continued as a volunteer from that point forward!”
What is your favorite aspect of your volunteer work?
“I have two favorite aspects. 1. I love working with the dogs in the habitats and 2. The trainers - who are so willing to help you learn. It is such a great experience to work with the dogs and see how smart and responsive they are to the B&T techniques that are used to help them be calm and learn. The trainers are willing to share their techniques so that you are always able to learn different approaches to different dogs in different situations.”
What is your most memorable volunteer experience?
“Probably the most memorable experience was working with a trainer inside a habitat and seeing how a very excited and reactive dog was calm and attentive by the time we left the habitat. I thought I had witnessed a miracle!”
Staff comments regarding Dana:
In recognizing her for this award, Anyah Hoang said, “Dianne is an amazing, dedicated, and compassionate volunteer. She has gone above and beyond while in the B&T Apprenticeship program and continues to give 110% as a B&T Volunteer. You can always count on Dianne to work with the dogs on the Adoption Floor and then be available to assist in public classes. SDHS is so lucky to have a volunteer like Dianne!” |
