Volunteer Opportunities

Animal Rescue Reserve
Volunteers are needed to help rescue animals from floods, fires and other emergency situations. Large animal experience is preferred. The minimum age to volunteer here is 18. Background check and special application apply.

Commitment: One four-hour training meeting per month (held on weekends) and help during emergencies.

Canine Programs
For volunteers interested in working with our dogs, we have the following opportunities available:

Animal Care Assistants take dogs out for their morning and evening walks. Shifts are available beginning at 8am or 5pm, 7 days a week.

Dog Activities volunteers take dogs out for daily fun sessions outdoors. Shifts are available 11am-1pm, 7 days a week.

Dog Buddy volunteers visit our adoptable dogs in their habitats for socialization and basic training activities. 

Commitment: Six hours per month

Cat Companions
Volunteers spend time with our adoptable kitties in their habitats.  This is a great chance for socialization for our cats and also helps showcase them to potential adopters.

Commitment: Six hours per month

Community and Education Programs
Volunteers are needed to assist our Humane Educators with outreach programs in local schools.  Volunteers assist with animal handling during the program, no public speaking is required.  You must be comfortable with small pets like guinea pigs, rats and rabbits.

Shift: Between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., shift times vary.
Commitment: One to two shifts per month.

Development
The Development department processes donations and oversees all of the fundraising events for the society. Volunteers are needed for working at special events, and periodically help with office work.

Shift: Office work (Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm), special events (weekends).
Commitment: Varies, depending on society activities

Foster Care
Volunteers can provide temporary care for cats and/or dogs with litters, underage animals and ones with treatable illnesses. You must be able to provide transportation and complete a home inspection. All supplies are provided. A training class is required and the minimum age to volunteer for this program is 18.

Greeter
The primary role of the Greeter is to help direct the society's customers to the proper location and answer basic inquiries while making a favorable first impression. Volunteers must enjoy interacting with the public and be willing to learn about society programs and services.

Shift: Afternoons
Commitment: Two shifts per month

Mobile Adoptions
Volunteers can help adoption counselors represent the society and take animals out into the community. The society RV travels to various locations and special events with adoptable animals. You must be comfortable interacting with the public and must be able to lift and carry 35-40 pounds. The minimum age to volunteer is 18.

Shift:  3-4 hour shifts on weekends.
Commitment: 1-2 shifts per month

Pet-Assisted Therapy
Volunteers bring the joy of animal companionship to people in convalescent homes, hospitals and children's treatment centers. Resident rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and when available puppies and kittens are chosen for their gentle temperament. Special qualifications are required for volunteers that are interested in bringing their own animal on visits, click here for details. The minimum age to volunteer here is 18.

Commitment: Two shifts per month (average shift time is 3 hours)

Retail
Volunteers assist the Muttique staff with various duties such as engraving ID tags and recommending products to new pet owners.  Best of all, all adoptions are finalized in Muttique so you get to see lots of new friends going home!  

Commitment: Six hours per month

Small Pets
Volunteers spend time socializing and grooming our littlest residents: the guinea pigs, rats, and rabbits in our care.

Commitment: Six hours per month
