Nala is really something special

Animal ID: 548612

Volunteer: Vincent

Nala is a sweet, 5-year-old girl who was recently diagnosed with a degenerative disorder of the retina. In other words, she is going blind. It hasn’t been an easy journey for her, adjusting to this change and to life in a shelter after living in a home, but this remarkable girl is resilient, and she’s shining brighter and brighter every day. She has captured the heart of just about everyone who meets her, including Canine Companion volunteer, Vincent. Read on to see what Vincent has to see about this very special doggie, and why he has chosen Nala as his volunteer pick…

What do you like best about her personality?
“Nala is gentle and very sweet. Despite everything she has been through, she is so trusting and friendly.”

What first drew you to your pick?
“She didn’t come to the window when I first walked by and she looked so lonely, I had to meet her.”

Is there something special about the way your pick looks?
“Nala seems to stare into the distance, which some may attribute to her visual impairment, but I like to think that she’s daydreaming about ice cream and walks in the park with the new family she’s been waiting for.”

What is her coolest/silliest/most unique trait?
“When I take Nala down the corridor to go outside for a walk, she can sense when another dog is looking at her through the enclosure windows, by sound and smell alone. She’s pretty remarkable. ”

Anything else you’d like to add?
“Nala has a heightened sense of hearing and smell. Some might say she has a heightened ability to love, too. She loves leashed walks, playing with toys, listening to stories and being pet. She’s also a real cuddlebug. It’s impossible not to fall in love with her.”
