Dangers of Cannabis for Pets
Recently, a veterinarian from VCA Animal Hospital told one of our supporters that the number one emergency issue they’re seeing is from pets getting into or being given marijuana. In fact, the Pet Poison Helpline reports a 448% increase in marijuana toxicity cases in the past six years.
With the recent legalization of marijuana in California, there’s an increased risk of animals getting into things they’re not supposed to. With any toxic materials, it’s important to be diligent in keeping them out of reach of our pets. It can save their lives.
This has also brought on the debate about whether or not marijuana can be used for medicinal purposes for pets. There simply hasn’t been enough research on the topic for it to be trusted as a safe option. It’s best and safest to steer clear. If you suspect your pet has injested marijuana, look out for the following signs of overdose:
- Lethargy
- Vomiting
- Urinary incontinence
- Disorientation and hyperactivity
- In severe cases, tremors and seizures can occur
If you find yourself in a medical emergency, call your veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline at 1-800-213-6680 for immediate help.
The bottom line when it comes to marijuana use and pets is: Be careful. Keep all forms of marijuana, medical or recreational, out of reach of your pet. Thank you for always being the best possible advocates for our animals. Together, we can keep them safe and healthy.
