We Need Our Community’s Help

San Diego Humane Society is facing unprecedented challenges in housing animals who need help and is turning to the community to assist in creating much-needed space in their shelters. On top of being at- or over capacity at its locations in Escondido, El Cajon, Oceanside and San Diego, recent cases of canine distemper virus (CDV), are adding to the challenge. Dogs who have either tested positive or been exposed to CDV, are being quarantined, according to appropriate disease management protocols. In order to prevent and minimize further exposure, the organization has temporarily suspended the intake of owner-surrendered dogs until Jan. 15, 2023.

Twice each year, in one of nature’s most amazing events, billions of birds make enormous and hazardous journeys from their breeding grounds to wintering areas. Some travel as much as 25,000 miles every year, from the high Arctic to the tip of South America and back. Of the more than 500 bird species found in San Diego, almost 2/3 of them migrate into or out of the area every spring and fall. Join avid birder Stan Walens, who has collected almost 40 years of data on seabird populations in San Diego, talk about how the fascinating process of migration works and the benefits and problems it presents.
