Tail-Wagging Trails
San Diego boasts miles and miles of hiking trails in every corner of the county. Here are four popular choices for people with pets.

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve
Between Rancho Peñasquitos and Sorrento Valley lies this natural paradise, complete with waterfall and more than 37 miles of trails. A leash no longer than 8 feet is required.
Black Mountain and Mercy Roads
Mission Trails Regional Park
Home of the uber-popular Cowles Mountain, Mission Trails Regional Park has more than 40 miles of trails on 5,800 acres. A leash no longer than 8 feet is required.
Father Junipero Serra Trail
Sunset Cliffs
If you’re looking for a non-strenuous walk with a spectacular view, Sunset Cliffs is the spot. A 1-mile out-and-back trail offers ocean views and, of course, the promise of the setting sun.
1253 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
Tecolote Canyon Natural Park
The 6.5 miles of trails in this central San Diego spot located between Clairemont and University City are popular for mountain biking and hiking. Beware of wildlife in this canyon—as on all trails—and keep your dog leashed at all times.
5180 Tecolote Road
Training Tip: “After a hike or off-road run, check your dog’s feet for foxtails, rocks, or cracks,” says Dawn Celapino, leashyourfitness.com.
