San Diego Campus Adoptions Building Renovations
Pardon our dust!
We’re renovating our Adoptions Building at our San Diego Campus (5500 Gaines St.). Please read this important information so you know what to expect when visiting our San Diego Campus:
To adopt an animal: Adoptable animals at our San Diego Campus are being temporarily housed in our buildings directly across the street (at 5485 and 5495 Gaines St.).
- To adopt a cat or small pet: Feel free to visit us at 5495 Gaines St. to browse our adoptable cats and small animals and meet with an Adoption Counselor! You can also see all adoptable animals on our website prior to visiting us.
- To adopt a dog: To protect the comfort of our dogs in their temporary housing, the adoption gallery is not open to the public for browsing. Please check out the adoptable dogs (filter by species and location) on our website first, then come in during normal business hours when you’re ready to adopt and have one (or a few!) dogs in mind. An Adoption Counselor will meet with you on a first-come, first-served basis, introduce you to the dog(s) you’re interested in and help complete your adoption.
- Visit our other campuses! Our El Cajon, Escondido and Oceanside campuses are not affected by this renovation project. We hope to see you soon!
All other San Diego Campus services (including admissions, licensing, lost and found, Community Pet Pantry and more) will remain available at their usual locations. Thank you for your patience!
San Diego Humane Society has embarked on a major expansion of the adoptions building at our San Diego Campus (5500 Gaines St.) to better meet the needs of the thousands of animals and people it serves every year. Beginning April 27, adoptable animals at our San Diego Campus will be temporarily housed in our buildings directly across the street (5485 and 5495 Gaines St.). All other San Diego Campus services (including admissions, licensing, lost and found, Community Pet Pantry and more) will remain available at their usual locations.
Since our San Diego Campus was built in 2003, we have grown into one of the largest shelters in the country and a national leader in animal welfare. With the support of our community and friends like you, we now care for more than 40,000 animals each year, thousands of whom are housed at our San Diego Campus. Reimagining this space is necessary to meet the growing needs of the animals and people who rely on us.
As you can see from the renderings, these improvements will dramatically enhance our animal habitats and our adopters’ experience. The new, remodeled space will offer additional indoor/outdoor space for cats, Solatubes® to bring natural light into the animal habitats, better housing for small pets, more dog habitats with drainage that will allow for an easier animal care routine, additional yards for exercise and new technology that will help set the standard in animal shelter design. We envision it as a place that will inspire compassion and serves as a resource for animals and the people who love them throughout San Diego.
While this project is a significant undertaking, we’re thrilled that it will support our commitment to exceptional animal care. We look forward to working with animal lovers in our community to continue funding this critical project. If you’d like to support the expansion, we have excellent naming and recognition opportunities available. To learn more, contact our Philanthropy department at [email protected] or 619-243-3434.
We look forward to welcoming you to our new and improved Adoptions Building when the renovation is complete. In the meantime, we hope you’ll “pardon our dust” while we continue to improve the way we care for animals in need.
