Murphy Canyon Plane Crash Emergency Response

  • If your animal has gone missing as a result of the plane crash in San Diego's Murphy Canyon neighborhood on May 22, 2025, please visit sdhumane.org/lost for information that can help you find your lost pet.

At 4:42 a.m. on Thurs., May 22, 2025, we received a call about a small airplane having crashed into a residential neighborhood in Murphy Canyon. The San Diego Police Department reached out to our Humane Law Enforcement team to assist in responding to the tragic incident.

In addition to our officers, our Emergency Response Team was deployed to conduct search and rescue operations. Our specially trained volunteers worked in the evacuation zone to retrieve animals who were lost or left behind, and returned them to their owners.

Our San Diego and Escondido campuses took in multiple animals, including 13 dogs, 8 puppies, 1 cat and 5 geckos. Twelve of the dogs were exposed to jet fuel, and our medical team immediately examined them and performed a critical decontamination process.

At the evacuation center at Miller Elementary, our staff supported pet families by setting up temporary shelter and providing supplies.

Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this tragedy. We're here to help — every step of the way.
