Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)
In early October, HPAI was confirmed in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. As of Jan. 18, 2023, data from the USDA shows that HPAI H5N1 had been detected in at least 6,192 individual wild birds in 50 states and the District of Columbia since January of 2022. The infection had been confirmed in 316 commercial and 449 backyard domestic poultry and mixed-species flocks in 47 states, affecting a total of 58. 39 million commercial and backyard flocks.
