Shelter of Hope Partnership
The Shelter of Hope highlights how San Diego Humane Society works together with the American Red Cross during times of crisis. During local disasters, San Diego Humane Society answers the call to set up a shelter for pets adjacent to Red Cross shelters. While service animals are always welcome in Red Cross shelters, pets can’t be accommodated as some residents may be fearful of animals or allergic, among other reasons. Fortunately, shelter residents can safely house and visit their pets at nearby spaces thanks to our Emergency Response Team and we always encourage people to evacuate with their pets.
With the Shelter of Hope at our facility, there was a simulated Red Cross shelter in one of our multipurpose rooms with a simulated pet shelter just outside the door – similar to what you might see in a true disaster scenario. People were also able to put together their own pet disaster kit so they can be “Red Cross Ready.”
